Radiant Barrier
High-Tech Solutions
The material is high-tech, but the concept is simple. Our SolaShield™ Radiant Barrier reflects the heat from the sun that hits your roof. So less heat gets in your house. Our highly-reflective paint is also used in the aerospace industry to shield sensitive equipment from intense engine heat. We use rocket science to save you money!
Radiant Barriers Explained
A radiant barrier is a highly reflective material that is designed to reduce heat transfer by thermal radiation from the roof deck to the attic floor. Radiant barriers are commonly installed in attics to reduce summer heat gain and winter heat loss. Effectively installed, a radiant barrier can reduce overall energy usage by lowering heating and cooling costs. Radiant barriers can be effectively implemented in residential as well as commercial buildings. The primary benefit of a spray-on attic radiant barrier such as SolaShield™ is the reduction of air-conditioning cooling loads in warmer climates. Until recently, effective radiant barriers were only available in costly, bulky sheets of material.
Heat travels from warm areas to cooler areas by three distinctive methods: conduction, convection and radiation. Heat will flow by conduction from a hotter object to a colder object if the two materials make contact. Heat will flow by convection when a gas or liquid is heated and rises. Radiant heat travels in a straight line from a hot surface and will heat any solid mass as waves of energy make contact. On a bright sunny day, it’s primarily the sun’s radiant energy that will heat the roof. The majority of this heat will travel through the roof via conduction and cause the attic temperature to rise. The unique, patented, reflective composition of SolaShield™ prevents much of the heat absorbed by the roof from being radiated downward into the living area.
Why Use SolaShield™
Two main qualities of any given material dictate its effectiveness in preventing radiant heat transfer. These are emissivity (or the amount of energy a material gives off in the form of heat as a result of its own temperature), and reflectivity (or how much radiant heat is deflected and left unabsorbed by the material). SolaShield™ spray-on radiant barrier has a remarkably low emissivity rating and an equally impressive, high rate of reflectivity. Designed for the sole purpose of keeping radiant heat from penetrating through to your home, it is an efficient solution to minimizing heat conduction in your attic. It is also important to note that SolaShield™ has the added benefit of being a breathable compound. This means that, while it keeps unwanted heat from collecting in your attic space, it allows normal water vapor exhaustion, extending the life of your attic and roof.
